Discover Kalymnos: The Ultimate Sail & Climb Paradise in Greece
Imagine a place where sheer limestone cliffs rise dramatically from the sparkling Aegean Sea, where every handhold tells a story of adventure, and where the charm of authentic Greek island life invites you to pause and savor each moment. Welcome to Kalymnos, the undisputed climbing paradise of Greece and a flagship destination for Vertical Sailing Tour since 2013. Whether you are a seasoned climber or seeking a transformative adventure, this island offers a journey unlike any other when experienced from the deck of a sailing boat.
Why Kalymnos Is The Dream Destination for Climbers
Are you craving a climbing holiday that challenges your limits and renews your spirit? Kalymnos answers that call with its world-renowned routes and timeless Mediterranean allure. The island became an international sensation following the “The North Face Kalymnos Climbing Festival,” and for good reason: the rock is truly superb. From fine smooth slabs to the most perfect overhanging tufas in the world and featured walls for beginners, it is all here.
The island’s history is as vertical as its cliffs. Long before it was a climbing mecca, Kalymnos was the Mediterranean’s main sponge trade center. Legend has it that during the 1940s, under Italian occupation, “crazy Italian soldiers” were the first to climb these walls for fun. However, the modern era began in 1996 when Italian climber Andrea di Bari discovered the island’s potential, leading to the creation of the over 4,000 routes available today across Kalymnos and the neighboring island of Telendos.
The Vertical Sailing Tour Experience: Your Floating Basecamp
At Vertical Sailing Tour, we offer a mid-luxury adventure that replaces traditional hotels with a 45 to 55 ft. sailing boat. This is the ultimate “mobile basecamp” that allows you to:
- Wake up and dive: Start your day with a plunge into the Aegean directly from the boat.
- Sip and Prep: Enjoy a hot coffee under the morning sun while prepping your gear for the day.
- Access the Inaccessible: Avoid long, hot approaches. For example, we drop anchor right at Sikati Beach to access the famous Sikati Cave, skipping the arduous hike.
- Climb from the Sea: Experience deep water soloing in Vathy or tackle routes where your belayer works directly from the dinghy!
Your Ultimate Kalymnos Itinerary
Iconic Climbing Spots
Our tour is designed to touch the most beautiful and iconic spots in the archipelago. Guided by our UIAGM Alpine Guide and professional Skipper, you will explore:
- Telendos Island: We sail across to climb the crags of Eros, Pescatore, and Irox.
- Famous Sectors: Scale the walls of Grande Grotta, Arhi, The Ghost Kitchen, and Secret Garden.
- Sikati Cave: A unique climbing cathedral accessible comfortably by sea.
The Best Seasons to Visit
To ensure the best friction and comfort, we schedule our Kalymnos tours during the prime windows of May, June, September, and October. During these months, the weather is mild and the sea is perfect for the daily “aperitif by the amazing Kalymnos sunset.”
Embracing Authentic Greek Culture
This journey takes you to the heart of the “true, wild, and uncontaminated Greece.” Between climbs, you’ll encounter the authentic island rhythm: goats crossing the roads, old ladies selling thyme honey and olive oil by the wayside, and real tavernas serving delicious Greek specialties at reasonable prices. Life on board fosters this community spirit, as the crew and 7 to 10 guests share tasks and stories under the stars.
Life on Board & Gear
Our boats feature 4 to 5 cabins and shared living spaces designed for comfort. While we provide blankets and sheets, you are responsible for bringing your personal climbing gear, including a 60-80m rope and 12-15 quickdraws (which can also be rented from VST if requested in advance). Remember to pack in a soft/foldable bag, as rigid suitcases are not allowed on board.
